Working on Adjectives and Descriptions in Speech Pathology

Do you want to work on receptive and expressive vocabulary for preschool and school-age children? This printable, low-prep speech therapy resource is for you!

Difficulty with vocabulary skills is very common for children with language disorders. Children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) often find it difficult to learn new words and retain them. Being able to use a variety of words is an important part of communication. It allows us to be specific and accurate in conveying our thoughts and intentions, and it helps us to understand and learn more from the world around us.

This is a fun and adaptable activity to work on vocabulary such as adjectives, as well as sentence structure and oral description.

  • There are 2x 15 bright, fun monsters in this resource. Print out 1 or 2 copies and laminate the cards so you can play the game over and over.
  • Instructions for how to play "Go Monster", a describing game for adjectives (at word or sentence level) and descriptions, are included in the electronic download.
  • Each monster has been numbered to help you check you've got all the pairs you need at the end of each game.

You can use these cards for so much more than developing vocabulary. You could:

  • Use the game for a stuttering client's home practice.
  • Use the monster pictures for a storytelling activity.
  • Give the monsters nonword names to practice phonemic awareness (e.g. initial sound identification, segmenting or blending, phoneme manipulation).
  • Practice nonwords for motor speech sound disorder therapy, including Childhood Apraxia of Speech (give the monsters "names" that elicit your therapy targets!).
  • Use it as a generalisation task for speech sound therapy.

... and many more ideas. It's completely up to you.

BONUS IDEA: If your clients need additional support to generate adjectives or descriptions, use the cue cards from my Describe It resource to help scaffold their language and to increase independence during a game of "Go Monster".

I hope you find this resource helpful, and an easy way to make speech therapy fun for your clients!
